Ken Miller on The Colbert Report

Dr. Miller, a cell biologist from Brown University, speaks eloquently on the topic of science and religion in his first appearance on The Colbert Report in 2006.  His book, Finding Darwin's God, displays an incredible scientific mind and a thoughtful theologian.  As a Catholic and a scientist, Dr. Miller has found a way to combine evolution and religion into a peaceful co-existance in his own mind which he delivers concisely to the audience.  He thoroughly refutes intelligent design as bad biology and poor theology- in his books, interviews and in the Dover court case.

In this segment, Stephen Colbert begins with a tricky proposition: explain evolution in 30 seconds.  Miller does well.  People used to think that life had remained the same since their creation.  In the 1700's,  people began to appreciate fossils and understand that some organisms once lived on Earth that have now gone extinct.  That principle understanding propelled science forward from the former Great Chain of Being into our modern understanding of the Tree of Life.

Enjoy!
